Renal Scintigraphy

Procedure description:

Obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) and impaired urinary outflow may lead to obstructive uropathy (dilatation of the calicos, pelvis, or ureters) and obstructive nephrology (damage to the renal parenchyma). High-grade obstruction to urine outflow can rapidly lead to a nonfunctional kidney. Surgical intervention in suspected obstruction to urine outflow is aimed at preserving renal function.

Renal scintigraphy provides for the evaluation of split renal function and urine transit. A high-grade obstruction is usually acute and rapidly leads to loss of function. Intermediate and low grades of obstruction are common and lead to a more gradual loss of renal function.

Indication

  • Measurement of split function of a possibly obstructed kidney, to determine whether renal function is compromised and establish a baseline for monitoring any future loss of function that might require intervention.

  • Determination of whether renal obstruction is present in a patient who has signs or symptoms of obstruction.

  • Determination of whether renal obstruction is present in an asymptomatic patient for whom hydronephrosis was detected on prior imaging.

Patient preparation:

  • Generally it requires no specific preparation. Patient should drink fluid and remain hydrated.
